Stephen Walker was the first male in his family to complete
college. After receiving an AAS from Southside
Virginia Community
College, he pursued his love of history with a BA from Longwood University
in Farmville, Virginia
-- followed by a Masters Degree in history from Virginia
Commonwealth University
in Richmond, Virginia.
After completing his
graduate work, he taught high school for eight years, 2nd-5th
grade Social Studies for two years, then worked three years in the Mecklenburg County Public Schools as an Instructional Specialist for Social
Studies.
Currently Stephen teaches
undergraduate history for Southside Virginia Community College at campuses in Alberta and Keysville,
Virginia. He serves as the Program Coordinator for the Virginia Teachers’ Academy at Sweetbriar College
near Lynchburg and as Lead Facilitator for The Virginia Master
Teacher Seminar at Hampden-Sydney College
near Farmville, Virginia.
These week-long intensive summer programs attract public school and
college teachers from around the state and across the east coast. These residential seminars are designed to
promote innovation, creativity, and excellence in
classroom instruction.
Stephen’s programs are stocked with stories of the delights of living in a small
town in rural Virginia. His love of history is evident with relevant
anecdotes from past events and pertinent perspectives of historical
figures. His presentation character – Isaiah Walker -- offers
a costumed historical interpreter of the settlement and challenges of Colonial, Revolutionary,
and Civil War periods in American history. Audience members are apt to learn much about
themselves and contemporary culture through his stories from our
past.
Stephen Walker lives with his wife Cindy and their three children
in Charlotte Court House, Virginia
-- where he is also serving his second term as the Mayor of the town.
